No Such Thing as Vampires is the first episode of the TV series Moonlight.
Synopsis[]
A vampire lands work as a private investigator and falls for mortal woman.
A woman has been murdered, and two puncture wounds in her neck suggest a vampire attack. Mick St. John investigates as a private investigator, and Beth Turner reports the story for BuzzWire.
Plot[]
Beth Turner is a reporter for BuzzWire. A female college student has been murdered in a large shallow fountain and Beth sees that she has two puncture wounds to her neck. Mick St. John is a private investigator and comes across a barefoot Beth, who has been wading through the water. Beth thinks that Mick looks very familiar and asks him whether they know each other. He replies that he must have one of those faces! Beth says that the bites suggest a vampire attack but Mick tells Beth there is no such thing as vampires. As she looks back at the crime scene in the fountain, Mick suddenly vanishes.
Coincidently, they meet again at the dead girl’s apartment. Beth senses Mick’s presence and whacks him over the head with a glass bottle. He reacts by simply saying: “Ouch!” She comments that he was at the crime scene and threatens him with mace. Mick says he’s not the killer but he is a private investigator. Beth asks him to show her his ID card. He tells Beth that he already knows who she is and that she works for BuzzWire. That she was the best they have, to which, rather chuffed, she says thanks.
They find a vial of blood in the dead girl’s apartment. After some discussion about blood cults and vampires, Beth is interrupted by a call from Josh. Mick disappears again with Beth saying aloud: “Stop doing that.”
The dead girl's social anthropology professor, Christian Ellis, is a self-proclaimed vampire. He uses what knowledge he has of vampire culture to entice and seduce female college students. The vial of blood was the professor’s, which Mick already knew. Beth goes undercover as a student to expose the professor. Mick warns her that it could be dangerous and to be careful. She says: “What are they going to do? Kill a newcomer to get extra credit!” She again queries Mick as to whether they’ve met before.
After a study group meeting in a basement, the Professor attempts to seduce her. He discovers that Beth has a microphone and there is a struggle but she escapes. Outside, she is kidnapped by the professor's assistant Daniel, who anaesthetises her and takes off with her in his car.
Mick catches up to their car, smashes Daniels’s window and grabs him but he is temporarily dazed and hurt after being thrown by the out-of-control car. Daniel gets out of the car with a knife and goes after Beth in the passenger side. Mick intercepts him but Daniel stabs him in the chest. He tells Daniel he shouldn’t have done that and puts an end to him. At his apartment, Beth has vague recollections of Mick being stabbed but he passes it off. He is about to take her home when Beth gives him a long hug.
